117 rescued in ferry mishap<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (AFP): Some 117 passengers were plucked to safety by
\nrescue workers after a ferry ran aground on the reefs off
\nSingapore while on its way from Indonesia, police and Port of
\nSingapore Authority (PSA) officials said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Five passengers suffered minor cuts and bruises in the mishap
\nwhich occurred late Sunday as the Singapore-registered Penguin
\nEmpress was about to reach Singapore shores from Tanjung Pinang,
\na popular tourist spot on the southern Indonesian island of
\nBintan, they said.<\/p>\n
Tanjung Pinang is about two hours from Singapore by ferry.<\/p>\n
The five slightly injured Singaporeans were sent to the
\nGeneral Hospital here for outpatient treatment.<\/p>\n
The circumstances under which the Penguin Empress, with a
\nseven-man crew, ran aground were being investigated by the PSA,
\nofficials said.<\/p>\n
The passengers comprised 107 Singaporeans, six Malaysians,
\nthree Indonesians and a Briton, a police spokesman said.<\/p>",
