        "content": "<p>Batam (ANTARA News) - The Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) in April approved 11 foreign investment proposals worth US$6.55 million in Batam island, an official said.<\/p>\n<p>The agency also approved two expansion projects worth US$4.95 million under a foreign investment scheme in that month, Chief of the Marketing and Public Relations Bureau at the Batam Management Body Rustam H Hutapea said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Also in April, the agency received a domestic investment proposal worth Rp15 billion in Batam, he said.<\/p>\n<p>In the January-April 2009 period the agency approved 29 foreign investment projects worth US$23.20 million and six foreign expansion projects worth US$11.21 million, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The foreign investments came among others from Singapore, the United Kingdom, Australia, Malaysia, India, Luxemburg, Taiwan, Japan, China, the Netherlands, South Korea and British Virgin Island, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The foreign investors were enganged among others in ship building industry, wood palette industry, construction component industry, electrical panel industry, technical service industry and distribution chain, he said.<\/p>\n<p>To date, 1,079 foreign companies with a total investnment of US$5.20 billion and 163 domestic companies with a total investment of Rp3.128 trillion are operating in Batam, employing an estimated 294,000 workers.
