Java officials resign en masse<\/p>\n<p>Slamet Susanto, The Jakarta Post, Temanggung<\/p>\n<p>At least 108 officials from the Temanggung regency administration<br>\nin Central Java resigned on Monday, after they cited an inability<br>\nto carry out their duties because they could not work with<br>\nTemanggung Regent Totok Ary Prabowo, due to his &quot;arrogance&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>The walkout began on Saturday, when 16 officials, including<br>\nthe regency&apos;s secretary Setio Aji and heads of five divisions,<br>\nsubmitted their resignations.<\/p>\n<p>By Monday, the number rose to 108, including 12 heads of the<br>\nregency&apos;s 20 districts, causing a serious leadership vacuum and<br>\nresulting in poor public service throughout the regency.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The work has slowed, but we&apos;re still coming in,&quot; one of the<br>\nstaffers that remained, told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n<p>Head of traffic and parking at the tourism and transportation<br>\noffice, Ripto Susilo, said the mass walkout was a moral action to<br>\nencourage better leadership, and that it was done spontaneously<br>\nwithout any coordination.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We just hope the regent will take a good, hard look at<br>\nhimself and quit being so arrogant,&quot; Ripto said.<\/p>\n<p>The speaker of Temanggung legislative council, Bambang<br>\nSukarno, did not give any more details about the reasons behind<br>\nthe walkout, but said that it was clear evidence of a leadership<br>\ncrisis in the regency.<\/p>\n<p>However, he explained that one of the general complaints with<br>\nthe administration was its habit of replacing officials without<br>\nfollowing proper procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Temanggung Regent Totok Ary Prabowo told journalists on Monday<br>\nhe would not accept their resignations, and then claimed that<br>\nmany of the officials were unaware of what they had done. The<br>\nofficials, including himself, were pressured to resign, he<br>\nstated.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;As a father, I will make them realize, so they will go back<br>\nto serving the people,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He alleged that the move was orchestrated, but declined to<br>\ngive further details. &quot;I also know that tomorrow (on Tuesday),<br>\nthere will be a protest involving pedicab drivers, district<br>\nofficials and people from outside of Temanggung, who are getting<br>\npaid between Rp 10,000 and Rp 15,000 each,&quot; Totok complained.<\/p>",
