1,000 people left homeless after fire<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): About 1,000 people are now homeless after a huge
\nfire gutted houses in the densely populated residential area in
\nKartini subdistrict in Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta, yesterday
\nafternoon.<\/p>\n
No fatalities were reported but the fire caused a tall, black
\nplume of smoke to rise into the capital's sky.<\/p>\n
According to resident Hafidhin, 54, the fire started at about
\n3:30 p.m. in one of the houses in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n
\"I was just finishing my Azhar (afternoon) prayer when I heard
\na 'click' followed by flames in a two-story house behind my
\nhome,\" he told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Central Jakarta Police chief Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna said the
\ncause of the fire, which residents blamed on a stove explosion,
\nwas still under investigation.<\/p>\n
The afternoon fire prompted hundreds of the residents,
\nparticularly women, to flee in panic. Others tried desperately to
\nsave their possessions.<\/p>\n
Some locals, brandishing weapons, insisted the firefighters
\ndrive their vehicles closer the scene despite the fact the narrow
\nalleys made maneuvering difficult.<\/p>\n
