1,000 city administration employee absent<\/p>\n

About 1,000, or 20 percent of the 5,000 civil servants at City
\nHall and 60 percent of the City Council's 84 members failed to
\nshow up at the office on Wednesday, the first working day after the
\nIdul Fitri holiday.<\/p>\n
\"We will sanction those people who were absent without a
\nproper excuse,\" Governor Sutiyoso said after inspecting offices
\nat City Hall.<\/p>\n
However, the governor said the number of City Hall employees
\nwho showed up for work on the first day after Idul Fitri was
\nhigher than last year, when less than 50 percent of employees
\nfailed to make it to work.<\/p>\n
He said the improved attendance might be the result of the
\ngovernment's decision to extend the Idul Fitri holiday to five
\ndays from the two days of past years.<\/p>\n
\"Maybe they thought the five-day holiday was enough time to
\nspend with their families and relatives during the Idul Fitri
\ncelebration,\" Sutiyoso said.<\/p>\n
Administration spokesman Muhayat said the City Inspectorate
\nOffice was still identifying those city employees who were absent
\non Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\"Especially for high-ranking officials who were absent, it
\ncould influence their promotions. They should set a good example
\nfor their subordinates,\" Muhayat said.<\/p>\n
It is unclear the total number of employees who did not turn
\nup at the office on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The city administration employs about 90,000 civil servants,
\nincluding teachers and employees at the mayoralty, district and
\nsubdistrict offices. Teachers are still on holiday as schools
\nwill not reopen until Monday.<\/p>\n
During the governor's inspection, most of the employees who
\nwere at the office did not appear to be doing much work. There
\nwas a great deal of shaking of hands and discussion of how the
\nholidays went, and very little in the way of actual work.<\/p>\n
At the City Revenue Office, after Sutiyoso inspected the first
\nfloor a number of employees ran up to the second floor to fill
\nout the chairs before the governor made his way up to the
\npreviously empty floor.<\/p>\n
At least 51 of 85 councillors, mostly from the Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) and the United
\nDevelopment Party (PPP), were absent on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Very few PDI Perjuangan councillors made the trip to the
\noffice, though those who did show up included City Council deputy
\nchairman Tarmidi Suhardjo and councillor Ugiek Sugihardjo.<\/p>\n
PDI Perjuangan faction chief Agung Imam Sumanto and PPP
\ncouncillor and City Council deputy chairman Chudlary Syafei
\nHadzami were absent.<\/p>\n
The councillors who were present spent the morning greeting
\ntheir fellow councillors after the long break before heading home
\nin the afternoon. No sessions or meetings were scheduled in the
\ncouncil on Wednesday.<\/p>",
