The Indonesian government is accelerating efforts to ensure 100 per cent electrification across the archipelago by 2029. Under a mandate from President Prabowo Subianto, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is implementing targeted programmes to provide electricity to remote areas and isolated regions.

The government continues to accelerate the equitable distribution of
electricity access for communities in all corners of Indonesia. This
step is part of a mandate from President Prabowo Subianto to the
Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) to ensure that no region
remains isolated from energy access by 2029.

The Spokesperson for the Ministry of ESDM, Dwi Anggia, revealed that
one of the primary instruments for achieving this target is through the
Rural Electricity (Lisdes) programme. This programme is focused on
reaching communities that have previously never enjoyed any electricity
services.

“At the same time, there is a massive task that the government must
complete and continue to undertake, which is ensuring that electricity
is present for communities that have hitherto not even received
electricity access,” said Dwi Anggia in a press release alongside the
Indonesian Government Communication Agency (Bakom) on Tuesday
(10/09/2026).

Based on government data, the challenges in fulfilling electricity
access remain significant. In 2025, it was recorded that 10,068
locations still lacked electricity access. Meanwhile, entering 2026, the
government has identified 2,065 points with a total of 173,853 potential
customers in urgent need of electricity services.

Dwi ensured that these locations will receive electricity supply
gradually. The government aims for all these points to be fully
electrified by 2029, in order to achieve a 100 per cent electrification
ratio.

Given Indonesia’s diverse geographical conditions, the government is
implementing three different approaches in providing electricity
infrastructure.

Dwi emphasised that this diversification of technology is crucial to
ensure that energy provision is precisely targeted and meets the
specific needs of communities in each region. “This is part of the
government’s efforts to accelerate the achievement of a 100 per cent
electrification ratio by 2029,” she concluded.

Through the Rural Electricity (Lisdes) programme and the New
Electricity Connection Assistance (BPBL) programme, residents in remote
areas can now enjoy lighting that was once merely a dream.
",
