JEMBRANA \u2013 President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto,\nofficially launched the 100 gigawatt peak (GWp) Solar Power Plant (PLTS)\nprogramme whilst carrying out groundbreaking ceremonies for projects\nready to accelerate national renewable energy in Gilimanuk, Bali, on\nTuesday (25\/8\/2026). In its initial phase, the programme comprises 14\nsolar power projects with a total capacity of 5,300 megawatt peak (MWp)\nspread across various regions of Indonesia. This step implements the\ngovernment\u2019s aspiration of energy self-sufficiency and downstream\nindustrialisation through the use of renewable energy.<\/p>\n
President Prabowo said the development of solar energy is a strategic\nstep towards accelerating Indonesia\u2019s energy independence and\nself-sufficiency. According to him, the potential of renewable energy\nmust be harnessed on a massive scale so that national energy needs can\nbe met from domestic sources whilst delivering widespread economic\nbenefits to the public.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday is an important day; we are launching 100 GW of solar-powered\nelectricity for the Indonesian nation. (With the 100 GW PLTS Programme),\nwe will truly become a nation that stands on its own two feet,\u201d said\nPrabowo.<\/p>\n
As the initial phase of the programme, the government launched 14\nPLTS projects, one of which is the Gilimanuk Solar Power Plant, the site\nof the national programme launch. In Bangka Belitung, the Pulau Rengit\nSolar Power Plant has also been completed and has begun operating.<\/p>\n
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia,\nsaid the development of the 100 GWp PLTS programme follows President\nPrabowo\u2019s directive to find breakthroughs in accelerating national\nenergy sovereignty. Solar energy development is therefore being carried\nout by harnessing available resources across various regions of\nIndonesia through diverse scenarios, ranging from large-scale solar\nplants, floating solar, rooftop solar, to solar development for\nindustrial zones and productive activities.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday we are taking a great step to realise what the President has\nalways directed us to achieve, namely national energy self-sufficiency\nand sovereignty. Indonesia is a nation blessed by God with extraordinary\nresources. Resources that we must not only dig from beneath our feet,\nbut also from above our heads,\u201d said Bahlil.<\/p>\n
Bahlil added that the 100 GWp PLTS programme will be developed\nthrough eight main scenarios: the elimination of 12.48 GWp of coal-fired\npower plants (PLTU), the construction of large-scale solar plants\nthrough the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) reaching 30.97 GWp,\nfloating solar of 10.72 GWp, rooftop solar of 9.35 GWp, solar for\nunderdeveloped, frontier and outermost regions (3T) of 0.50 GWp,\noff-grid solar for productive activities of 4.36 GWp, non-rooftop solar\nfor industrial zones of 7.49 GWp, and demand creation through downstream\nindustrialisation, electric vehicles, induction cookers and other needs\nof 24.13 GWp.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf we can implement all of this, we can reduce emissions by 140\nmillion tonnes of CO2 per year, with a carbon economic value of Rp6.31\ntrillion,\u201d said Bahlil.<\/p>\n
According to Bahlil, large-scale solar development also carries\nsignificant economic impact. In terms of employment, the programme has\nthe potential to create around 5.5 million jobs, comprising\napproximately 3.465 million construction workers and 2.053 million\nmanufacturing workers.<\/p>\n
In its initial phase, the programme will deliver positive economic\nimpact through potential savings in fuel oil (BBM) consumption. The\ndevelopment of these projects will also act as a local economic catalyst\nthrough increased construction activity, manufacturing, and community\neconomic activity around project sites.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe total investment for this project is roughly USD 71.3 billion,\nor the equivalent of Rp1,140 trillion. Through all of this work, we can\nachieve efficiency in subsidies of up to Rp73.9 trillion each year,\u201d\nexplained Bahlil.<\/p>\n
PLN President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, said PLN is ready to fully\nsupport the Government\u2019s vision of realising energy self-sufficiency and\nnational downstream industrialisation. The company is committed to\naccelerating the 100 GWp PLTS Programme through collaboration with all\nstakeholders, whilst ensuring the readiness of the electricity system,\nsupporting infrastructure, and optimal development of solar\nprojects.<\/p>\n
\u201cPLN is ready to carry out the President\u2019s mandate to accelerate the\ndevelopment of the 100 GWp PLTS programme. As part of the national\nelectricity ecosystem, PLN will go all out so that solar energy\ndevelopment can be integrated into the electricity system reliably,\nsafely and sustainably. This is part of PLN\u2019s commitment to supporting\nenergy self-sufficiency through the use of domestic, environmentally\nfriendly green energy,\u201d said Darmawan.<\/p>\n
Darmawan expressed appreciation to the Government, particularly\nPresident Prabowo and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, for\ntheir support and direction in accelerating renewable energy\ndevelopment. According to him, the success of the 100 GWp PLTS Programme\nrequires cross-sector collaboration between government, PLN, businesses,\nindustry and the community.<\/p>\n

He added that, specifically in Bali as the location of the national\nprogramme launch, PLN together with the Bali Provincial Government will\ndevelop five Solar Power Plant Clusters with a total capacity of up to\n1,000 MWp, supported by a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) of 3,300\nMWh. This major step is an important foundation in building a clean\nenergy ecosystem in Bali, as the country\u2019s leading tourist destination\nand the face of Indonesia to the world.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn this collaboration, the solar capacity to be developed in Bali\nwill reach 1,000 MWp, of which solar plants with a total capacity of 300\nMWp will be developed in the Gilimanuk Cluster,\u201d said Darmawan.<\/p>\n
Darmawan said that going forward, the 100 GWp PLTS programme is not\nonly a strategic step to increase renewable energy capacity and achieve\nnational energy independence. The programme is also expected to drive\neconomic growth and improve public welfare across various regions of\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
