The Indonesian Coachbuilder Association (ASKARINDO) has officially\ndeclared the full readiness of the domestic manufacturing industry to\nsupport and supply the planned procurement of 10,000 electric bus fleets\nby PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta). At the same time, ASKARINDO\nis urging the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government and Transjakarta\nmanagement to make the use of local coachbuilders an absolute priority,\nin order to safeguard industrial sovereignty and the national\neconomy.<\/p>\n
This statement of position was delivered during a talk show entitled\n\u2018Readiness of the Domestic Coachbuilder Industry to Support Public\nTransport Electrification in Jakarta\u2019, organised by the Jabodetabek\nTransport Community (JTC) in cooperation with ASKARINDO and the Jakarta\nCity Transport Council (DTKJ) at BSD City, Tangerang, on Thursday\n(6\/8).<\/p>\n
ASKARINDO Supervisory Board member Sommy Lumadjeng emphasised that\npublic transport electrification must become a stage for the domestic\nindustry, not merely a market for fully imported products or Completely\nBuilt Up (CBU) units.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe quality of our local coachbuilders is already very good and\ncapable. The safety and security standards of our products have been\ntested and fully comply with international standards. We are ready to\nwelcome the plan for 10,000 Transjakarta electric buses. Now is the time\nfor local coachbuilders to be masters in their own country,\u201d Sommy\nasserted.<\/p>\n
ASKARINDO highlighted that the automotive and coachbuilder industry\nis the lifeblood of labour-intensive manufacturing. Prioritising local\nproducts means the government is directly safeguarding the availability\nof jobs for thousands of workers in assembly plants.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, domestic bus production will trigger massive economic\nturnover in the component industry supply chain, from glass, seats, and\nelectrical systems to air conditioning systems. Thus, the fleet\nprocurement budget does not evaporate abroad, but is absorbed by the\ncommunity and enlivens the national industrial ecosystem.<\/p>\n
Sommy Lumadjeng further highlighted the biggest challenge currently\nfacing local industry, namely the price imbalance caused by the\nproliferation of imported CBU products that often receive subsidies from\ntheir countries of origin.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe government must step in and protect the national industry. So\nthat we can compete on price with CBU vehicles from abroad, the\ngovernment must provide real intervention, such as considering tax\nreductions or other fiscal incentives. The national industry must be\nprotected so that the wheels of the economy can continue to turn,\u201d he\nadded.<\/p>\n
