NU seeks to reunite scattered members<\/p>\n
Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the nation's largest Muslim organization,
\nopened on Thursday a national conference aimed at reuniting its
\nfragmented politicians and ulemas scattered throughout different
\nparties and social groups.<\/p>\n
The three-day meeting, held at Jakarta's haj pilgrim dormitory
\ncomplex in Pondok Gede, was expected to recommend the
\nestablishment of an NU political commission at the national and
\nregional levels to achieve its goals and strengthen the political
\nrole of its members.<\/p>\n
\"Through this meeting we want to reunite the NU figures
\nscattered everywhere and reposition its national role,\" NU
\nchairman Hasyim Muzadi said in his speech.<\/p>\n

'Stop sending female workers to Middle East'<\/p>\n
State Minister of Women's Empowerment Sri Redjeki Sumaryoto has
\nstrongly urged the government to stop supplying women workers to
\nMiddle Eastern countries as they are still treating Indonesian
\nwomen employed as domestic helpers in the region as slaves.<\/p>\n
\"Such treatment amounts to abuse and therefore, a serious
\neffort is needed to ensure that Indonesian women working in Saudi
\nArabia and other Middle Eastern countries are treated humanely,\"
\nthe minister said in the West Nusa Tenggara provincial capital of
\nMataram on Thursday.<\/p>\n
She said she had delivered a letter to Minister of Manpower
\nand Transmigration Jacob Nuwa Wea to stop temporarily the
\ndispatch of women workers to the Gulf countries until they
\nrevised their rules to provide for protection of foreign workers.<\/p>\n

Analyst warns of public apathy toward MPR Annual Session<\/p>\n
A political analyst warned on Thursday that the public could
\nprove to be apathetic toward the upcoming Annual Session of the
\nPeople's Consultative Assembly (MPR), saying bribery among
\npoliticians would erode the credibility of the session's outcome.<\/p>\n
Political analyst Indria Samego of the Center for Information
\nand Development Studies (Cides) said the public had become used
\nto widespread corruption among the political elite.<\/p>\n
But when asked what the public could do to help make MPR
\nmembers accountable, Indria replied: \"Not much\".<\/p>\n
\"People are tired of politics, they're apathetic, they
\nprobably think the entire process (of democracy) just cannot be
\nmade to move faster,\" he said after a discussion on political and
\neconomic conditions ahead of the MPR Annual Session, slated for
\nnext month.<\/p>\n

People's poor welfare blamed on small budget allocation<\/p>\n
The small budgetary allocation for health, education and social
\nwelfare expenditure was a major factor that rendered Indonesia
\none of the countries least successful in improving the welfare of
\nits people, population experts said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the Indonesian Legislative Forum on Population and
\nDevelopment Surya Chandra Surapaty said social spending had yet
\nto enter the mainstream in the budget at either national or
\nprovincial level.<\/p>\n
\"Meanwhile, the education sector should receive 20 percent of
\nthe development budget and the health sector some 15 percent. At
\npresent we receive only 5 percent for each,\" he told The Jakarta
\nPost.<\/p>\n

Who contributes the most to the corrupt judiciary in the country?
\nAre they the prosecutors, lawyers or judges?<\/p>\n
\"All do, including the public and businesspeople who persist
\nto win legal case by buying the justice,\" noted lawyer Frans
\nHendra Winarta said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Frans, also a member of the National Commission on Law
\nDevelopment (KHN), was addressing a workshop on the benchmark of
\nthe recruitment of prosecutors, judges and advocates co-organized
\nby the KHN and the Yogyakarta-based legal watchdog, the
\nIndonesian Court Monitoring.<\/p>\n
Human rights lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis, who shared the same
\ntable with Frans in the workshop, asked the public not to hire
\n\"disgraceful lawyers\", who he described as those violating the
\nlawyers' moral ethic by guaranteeing victory to their clients and
\nhaving enjoyed \"luxurious\" life in their early career as lawyers.<\/p>",
