Jakarta has Maj. Gen. Djoko Santoso as new military commander
\non Wednesday, amid the controversy over the discontinuing of the
\nIndonesian Military (TNI)'s territorial role which is said has
\nbecome a tool for the force to gain political power.<\/p>\n
Djoko, a former Pattimura Military commander who oversees the
\nconflict-torn Maluku and North Maluku double as chief of security
\nrestoration operations in Ambon, played an important role in
\nending the sectarian conflict.<\/p>\n
Born in Surakarta, Central Java, Aug. 9, 1952, Djoko is a 1975
\ngraduate in infantry class of the National Military Academy.<\/p>\n
Djoko had been assigned to former province East Timor in 1976,
\n1981 and 1988 under Seroja military operations and had also put
\nas the youngest member of the House of Representatives from TNI
\nfaction in late 1990s.<\/p>\n
His wide knowledge of social and political realms made him
\nappointed as assistant of social and political affairs at his
\ncurrent post and deputy assistant of social and political affairs
\nfor the headquarters' territorial chief of staff office.<\/p>\n
Djoko, who is married with Angky Retno Yudianti with two
\nchildren, was appointed chief of staff of Central Java's
\nDiponegoro Regional Military Command in 2000 and was later
\nassigned chief of Malang-based Second Division of the Army's
\nStrategic Reserves Command in East Java in 2001.<\/p>\n
Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ryamizard Ryacudu, who officiated
\nDjoko's installment ceremony, said in his speech that Djoko will
\nface a challenging task in safeguarding the capital ahead of and
\nduring the 2004 general election.<\/p>\n
\"Jakarta is the center of government, politic and economy ...
\na barometer to the country's security face.<\/p>\n
\"With the general election come near, there is an intensifying
\nheat among political elites ... the general election will become
\na ring of physical fight among us children of the nation,\"
\nRyamizard read his speech.<\/p>\n
He ordered all military commands to monitor and to stifle any
\nactivities considered will lead to such a communal fight.<\/p>\n
In an interview with The Jakarta Post and Bisnis Indonesia
\ndaily newspaper, Djoko said he has another formula to maintain
\nsecurity in the capital which he learned from his latest post in
\nMaluku provinces: the bonds of good relationships.<\/p>\n
\"With a good approach to all political and society groups, I
\nbelieve security in Jakarta will go on stable,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"The police holds the role to maintain order and security and
\nto uphold the law, with the military to back up. But for
\nemergency situation, we will be at front,\" Djoko added.<\/p>\n
