With new powers under the special autonomy laws, the provincial
\nlegislature in Irian Jaya (Papua) has dropped all fees for
\nelementary and high school students as of the 2002\/2003 academic
\nyear to give children more of an opportunity to receive a quality
\neducation.<\/p>\n
Jerry Haurissa, chief of the local education office, said
\nfinancial issues had been one of the main problems preventing
\nschool-age children from attending school.<\/p>\n
\"With the new policy, all Papuan children aged between six and
\n18 are expected to go to school in attempt to improve the human
\nresource quality in the province,\" he told The Jakarta Post here
\non Tuesday.<\/p>\n
He admitted that various political and military conflicts had
\naffected schools, by causing many teachers to return to their
\nhome provinces while many students chose to stay home.<\/p>\n
\"We will hire more and more teachers from other provinces with
\nhigher salaries and interesting incentives to encourage them to
\nwork in remote areas,\" he said.<\/p>\n

Soldiers quizzed over
\npolice post attack<\/p>\n
The Military Police in Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra, are
\nquestioning three Indonesian Military (TNI) soldiers for their
\nalleged role in an attack on the Serbelawan Police subprecinct
\npost on Monday night.<\/p>\n
Bukit Barisan Military Command spokesman Lt. Col. Nurdin
\nSulistiyo said on Wednesday that Second Sgt. Tigor Marbun, First
\nSgt. Hotma Tunggul Samosir and Chief Sgt. Arif had been arrested
\nfor allegedly inciting their comrades to attack the police post.<\/p>\n
The attack left an officer, Second Brig. Marudut Panjaitan,
\nseverely injured with stab wounds.<\/p>\n

Thousands support

Thousands of protesters expressed on Wednesday their support for
\na government plan to dismiss the current management of state
\ncement maker PT Semen Padang, lending fresh backing to the
\ncompany's privatization efforts.<\/p>\n
Grouped under the Forum for the People of Padang (FPM-KP), the
\ndemonstrators charged the current management as corrupt and
\nlacking commitment to the local community.<\/p>\n
The mass protest followed a three-year long dispute between
\nJakarta and local politicians opposing the sale of Semen Padang.<\/p>\n
4. Lake: 21 x 2 lines<\/p>\n

\ndamaged Lake Tondano<\/p>\n
Locals and tourists are no longer able to enjoy the beauty of
\nLake Tondano, some 37 kilometers north of here in Minahasa
\nRegency, as it has been suffering from serious environmental
\ndeterioration for many decades.<\/p>\n
Fewer and fewer locals and tourists picnic along the lake's
\nshores following the disappearance of tourist resorts and
\nrecreation spots due to increasing population. Many locals now
\nuse the lake's shores for fishing and farming.<\/p>\n
\"The lake is no longer attractive for visitors as it has
\nsuffered serious environmental degradation. This is just one of
\nnegative impacts the environmental degradation has had on local
\npeople and the local administration's income,\" Sri Hardiyanti, a
\nresearcher from the National Resources Management organization,
\ntold The Jakarta Post here on Wednesday.<\/p>",
