Supporters press for new province

JAKARTA: A group of people claiming to be in favor of the establishment of Central Irian Jaya province visited the Constitutional Court on Tuesday to hand over a number of letters signed by tribal leaders supporting the new province.

Levina B. Karubaba, who met Constitutional Court Secretary General Oka Mahendra, told reporters that they would visit their representatives in the House of Representatives (DPR) and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The court is currently hearing a petition filed by opponents of the new province, who argue that the further partition of Papua will only incite conflict in the area. -- JP
