TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: President Susilo Bambnag Yudhoyono reportedly has ordered the energy and mineral Resources Department to manage efforts to reduce energy reliance on coal in the first cabinet meeting of his last term in office.
“It's good to know that the focus will be shifted to renewable energy,” Environment Minister Gusti Muhammad Hatta said on Friday during the job handover ceremony at the Environment Ministry, without elaborating.
Gusti said the instruction was made directly to the Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Darwin Zahedy Saleh on Friday.
Gusti said many forest areas in his native Kalimantan have became coal mines which have affected the ecosystem and destroyed infrastructure. “We produce a lot of coal but our electricity often cut,” Gusti said.
The forestry expert from the Lambung Mangkurat University also revealed that one of the main cause of the reforestation programs in the past was the lack of maintenance budget for the recovered forest areas, and vowed a sustainable program to address the problem.
He added that the presidential instruction will prompt cooperation with the Research and Technology Ministry and the Forestry Department.
