TEMPO Interactive, Padang: The Mentawai Islands Regency Government in West Sumatra is investigating three islands in the region that are suspected of being for sale via the www.privateislandsonline.com
The three island located to the southwest of Siberut Island are a resort site that has been built by foreign investors in Mentawai.
According to the website, the three islands offered for sale include Makaroni Island that is 14 hectares in size and priced at US$4 million; Siloinak Island that is 24 hectares in size and priced at US$1.6 million; and Kandui Island that is 26 hectares in size wide and priced at US$8 million.
The Mentawai Regent, Edison Saleleobaja through a SMS denied this report. “No one can sell the islands,” he said.
Head of the Mentawai Regional Tourism Office, Mansur Tamba, said that the Regent has called the subdistrict heads of Southwest Siberut and Village Head regarding this news.
“He has instructed them to investigate the case before it spreads more widely,” he said.
Director General of Coastal Areas and Small Islands, Alex SW Retraubun, said that it was prohibited to sell islands in Indonesia.
“Selling an island means selling out the country,” said Alex yesterday (26/8).
