TEMPO Interactive, Mataram: Entrepreneurs have asked the provincial government of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) to open shipping route between Lombok and Surabaya.
A journey by the current route of Sumbawa-Lombok-East Java through Bali takes between 14 to 24 hours.
According to a survey by Bank Indonesia, 62 percent of respondents have agreed to this idea of sea transportation facility from NTB to Tanjung Perak harbour in Surabaya.
“The sea transportation route would be helpful and could encourage the economy in NTB,” said the Head of the Mataram Branch of Bank Indonesia, Tri Dharma, on Friday (31/7).
People have to cross three straits from Sumbawa to Surabaya. The first strait is between Sumbawa and Lombok, the second is between Lombok and Bali, and the third is between Bali and Java.
He said that ferries that have experienced a decrease in passengers due to the Suramadu bridge can fill this route of Lombok-Surabaya.
