TEMPO Interactive, Balikpapan: The number of residents in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, increases by about 1,500 people every month.
The newcomers usually are from Java and Sulawesi.
This has made the current number of residents in Balikpapan now total 591,000 people.
“Now it is almost 600,000 people while it was only 500,000 people last year,” said Hasbullah Helmi, head of the demography database at the civil registration office in Balikpapan, on Tuesday (21/10).
Helmi explained the newcomers usually are interested in provincial government's programs like free education and health services for poor families.
Therefore, newcomers should complete the demographic requirements in Balikapapan.
ID cards cannot be issued without a letter of moving-out issued by newcomer's original regional administration.
“It is not difficult as long as you follow the procedure,” said Helmi.
