Manado, N Sulawesi, (ANTARA News) - PT Celebes Minapratama will export fish heads to Australia following high demands from the buyers there, a spokesperson said here Tuesday.
"Australian importers have expressed their interest in buying fish heads at Rp650,000 per kilogram which is higher than the local price of Rp100,000 per kilogram," Servie Kilis, PT Celebes Minapratama`s Human Resources and Public Relations Manager said.
If the supply was abundant, only some were sold in the local market and the rest were left to rot.
Servie said the weakening rupiah was an opportunity for exporters to optimize natural resources.
"Besides fish heads, the waste of boiled `kayu` fish also has good potential especially in Thailand. However after the initial exports, the demands stopped," Kilis said.
Hanny Wajong, Head of Foreign Trade Sub Division of North Sulawesi Trade and Industrial agency said that the global economic crisis benefited the local exporters.
"Commodities such as fish, plantation and farm products have a good potential in view of the depriating rupiah against the US dollar. Therefore they should be optimized," Wajong said.
Celebes as the best small and medium enterprises exporter in North Sulawesi has made the best use of all resources into products with a high value.
"In the current global economic crisis, exporters are asked to be more creative," Hanny said.(*)
