Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has warned domestic industries to remain competitive and not to use nationalism as an excuse for low performance levels.
Speaking at a function to present Upakarti, Technology Pioneer, and Indonesia Good Design Selection (IGDS) awards to 33 recipients at the State Palace here on Wednesday, the president said the motto "love domestic products" should not be a mere discourse.
"We should not use nationalism or the `love domestic products` motto as an excuse for inefficiency," the president said.
Amidst the global financial crisis, the domestic market had become very important as an absorber of domestic products that had lost overseas markets, he said.
The head of state also said domestic products should be competitive and not be more expensive than imports.
Yudhoyono expressed optimism that if local industries could sell their products and meet domestic demand, Indonesia did not need to be afraid of a global economic recession.
"If we are able to develop our industries, I am certain that in the next 10 years our economy and market will get stronger and thus have no need to worry about global economic recession," the president said.
The president added that domestic industries should continue to develop their competitive edge through greater creativity and innovation in order to be accepted by both domestic and overseas markets.
Commenting of national development, the president said it should be pursued in an integrated manner on the basis of three main factors, namely natural resources, science and technological development, and cultural assets.
Those three factors, according to the president, were important to determine the direction of Indonesia`s development policy.
"If we keep these three factors in mind, I am certain that we will not experience economic conflict or turmoil," the president said, adding that self understanding as a developing country was of great importance in the formulation of a policy because Indonesian development rules and order were not the same as those of other countries.
