Oxfam to sack Aceh staff over fraud

The aid group, Oxfam International, says it will take disciplinary action against 22 staff in Indonesia, after an investigation revealed fraud at one of its offices in Aceh.

The organisation has since recovered $26,000 in losses.

Oxfam closed two offices in Aceh in March when discrepancies were discovered between amounts paid to suppliers and the quantity of goods delivered.

Oxfam's regional media coordinator Gemma Swart has told Radio Australia that 10 local staff face dismissal for their involvement.

She says 12 others, including five international staff, will be counselled for management breaches.

She says relief projects will begin again and Oxfam is committed to the long-term recovery of Aceh.

so far nearly US$5,000,000,000 has been spent in aceh. US$ 20,000 is an insignificant drop in the bucket by comparison; it's what the foreign "aid workers" spend on coffee every month in the bandar aceh starbucks cafe! realistically, if 10% of the total aid (eg, US$500 million) was embezzled, then they are doing well in the indonesian context.
