Batam (ANTARA News/Asia Pulse) - North Sumatra province deserves to have a free trade zone (FTZ) to support the local economy and the region`s development, a local official said.

North Sumatra Communication and Information office head Eddy Syofian said the existence of a free trade zone in North Sumatra would benefit the province because it would absorb much of the work force and discourage illegal imports.

Belawan or Sibolga ports in Medan, Bagan Asahan port in Tanjung Balai Karimun or Tanjung Gading port had good potentials to serve as a free trade zone.
