Monday (ANTARA News) - The number of foreign tourists arriving in Manado last March grew by 33.49 percent compared to the same month in 2008 -- a fact attributed to the upcoming World Ocean Conference (WOC) and Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) Summit.
In March 2009, 2,013 foreign tourists visited the North Sulawesi provincial city and the number is predicted to increase in May during the WOC and CTI Summit from May 11-15, 2009.
North Sulawesi Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) spokesman Jasa Bangung said here on Monday that the number of foreign tourist arrival in Manado in March this year rose significantly while in the same period in the previous year it was only 1,508 people.
He said that as of March this year 612 tourists from Malaysia came to Manado followed by 197 tourists from Germany, 131 from the United States, and only three persons from Taiwan.
According to Jasa Bangun, most of the tourists wanted to obtain first hand information about the potential and natural beauty of North Sulawesi which had been promoted together with WOC and CTI Summit in their respective countries.
He said the number of tourists would continue to rise in connection with WOC and CTI Summit which is to be attended by more than 4,500 participants from 121 countries. (*)
