Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati reminded here on Tuesday that protectionism trend amidst the current global financial crisis may cause financial loss to the national as well as to the global economy.

The minister made the remark at a meeting with 15 Indonesian ambassadors.

Meanwhile, Mahendra Siregar, deputy to Sri Mulyani, who is concurrently acting Coordinating Minister for the Economy, in charge of economic cooperation and international financing, said the minister also reminded the envoys to maintain Indonesia`s commitment to international cooperation.

Siregar also said proper action would be needed to anticipate a crisis due to the lack of protection from other countries.

"Indonesia will maintain its international commitment and hopes all countries will do the same. By closing one`s door to international trade, a country will sooner or later feel the adverse impact of its action," he said.

Indonesia`s effort to increase its exports will face obstacles posed by protectionism of other countries.

"The ambassadors need to have information and knowledge on Indonesia`s foreign policy in maintaining their international cooperation commitment," said Siregar.

On the occasion, the finance minister also touched on Indonesia`s preparations, role and contribution to bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation in facing the global financial crisis. (*)
