Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Corruption in Indonesia continues to be rampant because the corruption eradication strategy was ineffective and the government as well as law enforcers were often inconsistent, a legislator said.

"Corrupt practices have even been on the rise, while the state has declared a war and mobilized its `war machine` called the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK)," Bambang Soesatyo, a member of parliament from the Golkar faction, said here Monday.

In addition to the ineffective strategy, the government and law enforcers were often inconsistent and tended to be selective in dealing with corruption cases by preferring to address relatively minor cases, he said.

"The inconsistency was quite evident in several cases. For instance, in the `cicak vs buaya` case, the government`s `grey ` stance` has caused the legal status of Bibit-Chandra (KPK commissioners) case has been unsettled for quite long," Bambang Soesatyo said.

He was of the opinion that the government was inconsistent in eradicating corruption by letting KPK being `paralyzed`.

Another example of the inconsistency that he pointed out was the Century case which has also been unsettled.

"May be because there is an indication that the scandal involves a number of strong men," he said.

The public was also often disappointed because quite many major corruptions were sentenced short imprisonment and even freed, while some corruption whistle-blowers were jailed, he said.

The government`s political will was urgently needed in fighting corruption in this country, he said.

Without the government`s political will, even 100 KPKs would be able to stop corruption practices in this country, he said.
