Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Industries in Java and Bali are expected to switch part of their weekly operation time to Saturdays and Sundays to make more efficient use of electricity amid a temporary reduction in the national power supply starting next July 21, Industry Minister Fahmi Idris said.

A joint decree of five ministers on the switch would be signed next week for enforcement effective July 21, he said at a function to announce the planned measure at the Industry Ministry here Friday.

On July 14, state electricity company PLN and the Home Affairs Ministry would give the public more details on how the measure would be implemented, he said.

Explaining the reasons for the measure, Idris said PLN had until now been having an electricity deficit of 600 MW per day or about 3,000 MW per week. On the other hand, every Saturday and Sunday, it had an idle electricity supply capacity of 1,000 MW and 2,000 MW. By changing industries` weekly days-off from Saturday and Sunday to Friday and Monday, the idle capacity could be used to cover the shortfuall in power supply.

By the switch, industries would also not be affected too much by the rotational power blackouts PLN was planning to implement starting July 11, the minister said.

He said the measure would be temporary as national power supply capacity was expected to return to normal with the operation in early 2009 of new power plants with a combined capacity of 10,000 MW now under construction across the country.(*)
