Garut (ANTARA News) - Minister for Empowerment of Women Meutia Hatta Swasono said that only 0,18 percent of the Indonesian population consists of self-supporting businesspeople, while the country will achieve good progress if at least 2-3 percent of the total population has become self-sufficient.
And in general, only 0.01 percent of big businesspeople, and 99.9 percent, or 51.257 million small and medium businesses, contributed to 55.56 percent of the gross domestic product, or Rp2,609.36 trillion, she told about 300 participants of a symposium on boosting the potentials of women toward the business world, in Garut on Monday.
However, there were 50.697 million micro and small businesspeople (98.19 percent), 60 percent of which were businesswomen, so that the empowerment of women in the economic sector is of utmost importance, she pointed out.
In view of several factors which had encouraged women to play a bigger role in the economy in the coming years following globalization, which had contributed to the narrowing of discrepancy for businesswomen, and opportunities for women to show their real potential.
In addition, she added, information technology which had also developed to the rural areas had also caused women to be able to work from their homes such as via the Internet.
In this way women has become increasingly reckoned with on the global market, not only as workers, but also as business entrepreneurs and with training in entrepreneurship, micro and small businesses will grow and provide an opportunity to women to carry out many other types of work they can handle.
She also reminded that women are playing an important role in the progress of a nation, as a UN slogan said "if you educate one man, you educate one person, but if you educate one woman, you educate a whole generation," she said. (*)
