Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government will quickly complete an opportunity to empower telecommunication sector by reopening business opportunity in telecommunication industry following a reform in thetelecommunication sector, an official said.

The reform in telecommunication sector carried out in 2000-2005 had not met people`s high demand for telecommunication service, Post and Telecommunication Directorate General`s spokesperson Gatot S. Dewa Broto said here Monday.

"Duopoly during the telecommunication sector reform had not give significant contribution to increasing telecommunication teledensity as access network-based communication and backbone network were still limited," he said.

The government through the Directorate Post and Telecommunication, therefore, should ask public about suggestion to complete a white paper of local fixed line implementation development business opportunity opening plan.

"The public consultation on the suggestion is being carried out on December 8-15," Gatot said.

He said the business opening plan will hopefully boost conducive competition climate for telecommunication management agencies to create more efficient telecommunication service, develop small medium enterprises, and expand cheap bandwith-based service competition.

Today, Gatot said, local fixed network implementation is mainly carried out in profitable areas, cable network investment is expensive due to too wide geographic condition, long-distance call fixed line operator number is limited, and backbone network operators have only served profitable areas.

He said number of fixed line and wireless phone service subscriber was recorded at 8.2 million, cellular phone subscriber 55 million, Internet subscriber 1,5 million, and internet access 16 million. (*)
