Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government will keep its target of economic growth that has been set at six percent for next year despite the current global economic crisis.

In a meeting with central bank officials, business leaders, state-owned company executives, economic observers and mass media chiefs here on Monday President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called for safeguarding the current momentum of economic growth.

He mentioned the difficulties faced by the government to revive the economy after the crisis in 1998. He said the country`s economy had grown within the range of six percent for last seven quarters and therefore "let us maintain the six percent growth."

He said he knew almost all countries corrected their growth target down but "let us work hard to make the economy grow by six percent."

In connection with it he called for strengthening the domestic market by maintaining consumption and encouraging the people to use domestic products.

He also called on the people to be smart enough to seek investment opportunities to avoid liquidity shortage in the market such as by seeking investment from the Middle East that had so far been flooded by petrodollars.

On the occasion he also reminded immigration and customs agencies to tighten their control to prevent reverse flows of export products from the US and Europe to the country`s market.

He said the control was also important to protect domestic products from the possible assault of reverse import products.

The president on the occasion also called for a synergic effort by the government, the central bank and the business community to face the challenge by continuing developing communication among them and wiping out distrust.

He said the lack of trust and solidarity were among the factors that had contributed to the economic crisis in 1998.

"That is the dark side of the past. Let us now together prevent the recurrance of the situation," he said.

He said the current global crisis would not create a crisis like the one in 1998 because the causing factors were not the same as those ten years ago.(*)
