TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Industry Minister MS Hidayat said the government maximize protection for domestic market by intensifying and reactivating non tariff regulations in facing the ASEAN-CHINA free trade starting next year.

Hidayat said on Monday (21/12) at the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy "Major measures which have not been intensified are now should be taken," and smuggling is one of the problems that should be solved.

Zero tariff regulation on several commodities categorized into the normal track group will commence on January 1st 2010, but the Trade Department have proposed delay for 314 tariff posts of over 2,500 posts in the ASEAN - China trade deal.

Hidayat said the government will try to negotiate tariff reduction with ASEAN and China, including through informal lobbies which he declined to specify.
