TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Coordinating Minister for the Economy Boediono estimated that the improvement of Indonesian economics will only be restricted to 2008. In 2009, the government and legislative members will focus on political issues instead of economic ones. “In 2009, politics will take over the executive and legislative focus,” he said when opening a coordinating meeting of Domestic Market Protection yesterday (04/03) in Jakarta.

In 2009, the government's realistic target will be to sustain the achievement of the previous year. At that time, he said, it will not be realistic for targeting breakthroughs and economic innovations.

Therefore, according to him, the government must truly make use of the economic improvement this year and next. For instance, the target of growth in 2007 of 6.3 percent and 2008 with 6.8 percent must be attained.

He was optimistic that the target can be reached because there was an indicator of improvement in the previous year. For instance, there was significant improvement regarding fiscal management, especially from budget management. State revenues are getting better every year. “Budget disbursement is also faster,” he said.

According to the minister, the indication of economic improvement is also supported by a tendency of interest rate cutting. In addition, the inflation rate is inclined to decrease. Bank Indonesia has also issued a relaxation of interest rate cutting.
