TEMPO Interactive, Yogyakarta:The Affandi Museum in Yogyakarta is featuring a bamboo products design exposition from December 14 to 17. The products displayed consist of musical instruments, souvenirs and toys created by 21 finalists of the 2009 Awi-awi Mandiri competition. Awi-awi Mandiri is a bamboo products design competition organized by the cultural workshop Saung Angklung Udjo in Bandung, in collaboration with Bank Mandiri. “This is the second year we are organizing it,” said Bhawika Prasetya, corporate secretary of Saung Angklung Udjo, at the Affandi Museum yesterday.

According to Bhawika, the judges evaluate the products based on design, function and marketability. “For example, a well-designed, functional toy might fail to be a finalist if its price is too expensive,” he said.

After participating in expositions in Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Singaraja, the 2009 Awi-awi Mandiri finalists will be invited to Saung Angklung Udjo to participate in workshops and to visit bamboo crafts centers and bamboo entrepreneurs “The announcement of the winners and prize awarding will be held at Saung Angklung Udho on December 19,” said Bhawika.
