TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Carunia Mulya Firdausy, Deputy Minister for Community Dynamics at the Research and Technology State Ministry, has said that alternative energy sources like wind, water and sun, do not produce enough results to provide any additional electricity supply to meet the need of the islands of Java and Bali.

“The PLTN (nuclear-powered electric generator plant) is the right choice to be implemented in Indonesia,” said Carunia during the Nuclear Environment, Energy and Security Regional Workshop at the Centre for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) building on Tuesday.

Also attending the event were 33 representatives from the government, the National Nuclear Energy Agency (Batan), the House of Representatives and Southeast Asia countries as well as Australia.

Carunia was responding to the suggestion of Fabby Tumiwa, the Institute for Essential Services Reform’s Director of Action, that the government develops solar power energy.

In addition to being more efficient, according to Fabby, solar energy has lower risks and is more useful compared to PLTN.

In addition to needing funds in the region of US$8 billion, there are also many negative sides to the PLTN project.

Radioactive waste management, maintenance and fuel supply cost a great deal.

“This project needs 30 to 40 years time for all investment to be returned,” he said.

The value of the project made the CSIS Deputy Director, Rizal Sukma, worried that PLTN was prone to corruption.

“Because the project financing is very high,” he said.

However, Carunia said he was convinced that PLTN did not produce gas emissions (green house effect) like fossil energy electricity generating plants.

As regards uranium reserves in West Kalimantan that are only enough for 11 years, he said that if these run out, then Indonesia can import uranium from Australia or Africa.
