Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Agriculture Ministry expressed hope that the import duty exemption on soyabean should be reviewed once in every three months so that it will not cause a loss to the growers.

Sutarto Alimuso, Agriculture Ministry`s food plantations affairs director general said here on Friday that low price of domestic soyabean has caused the local farmers reluctant to grow soybean.

Alimuso said, soyabean price in 1992 reached Rp8,000 per kg, making the local farmers encouraged to intensify the cultivation of the commodity, and this led to the national production to increase to 1.6 million tons, or up by 300 percent compared to the previous 600 thousand tons.

"However, the lower price of imported soyabean caused the local farmers to be reluctant to continue growing the commodity," he added.
